Venezuela Moves Military Closer to Trinidad and Tobago
Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López announced Sunday that the military will be repositioned closer to Trinidad and Tobago to counter what he described as criminal activity, including smuggling and human trafficking, in the Gulf of Paria. He said the move comes under instructions from President Nicolás Maduro, with troops expected to operate near the Paria Peninsula — just 8 miles from Trinidad’s northern coast.
Brazil Sees Mass Protests Against Bolsonaro Amnesty Efforts
Tens of thousands of Brazilians took to the streets Sunday in the largest leftist demonstrations in years, rejecting legislative moves to shield former President Jair Bolsonaro and allied lawmakers from prosecution. Bolsonaro, sentenced to 27 years in prison over a failed coup attempt, remains under house arrest pending appeals. Protesters denounced efforts for political amnesty or pardon, highlighting Brazil’s sharp divisions. The Supreme Court’s conviction marked the first time military officers have been punished for attempted coups in the country’s history.
Albania Appoints AI “Minister” to Fight Corruption
Albania has taken a bold — and symbolic — step by introducing an artificial intelligence-powered “minister” into its cabinet. Named Diala, which means sun in Albanian, the AI bot was presented by Prime Minister Edi Rama as Minister for Public Procurement. Although not legally recognized under Albania’s constitution, Rama said Diala’s role is to ensure transparency and curb corruption in public tenders. Unlike human ministers, he joked, Diala “will only be power hungry in terms of electricity.”
