UN Condemns U.S. for “Extrajudicial Killings” in Caribbean Anti-Drug Strikes
The United Nations has issued a strong condemnation of the United States, accusing it of carrying out extrajudicial killings through a series of airstrikes on vessels in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific, allegedly linked to drug trafficking.
In his first official statement on the matter, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk described the actions as “unacceptable,” urging Washington to halt such operations and prevent further loss of life immediately.
“These actions and their mounting human cost are unacceptable. The U.S. must halt such actions and take all necessary measures to prevent the extrajudicial killing of people on these boats—whatever the alleged criminal conduct,” Türk stated.
The condemnation follows a recent escalation of U.S. military activity in the Caribbean under President Donald Trump, who ordered an amphibious squadron deployment to combat what he termed Latin American drug cartel threats.
Over the past several weeks, the U.S. military has conducted deadly strikes against vessels Washington alleges are operated by Caracas-backed traffickers—a claim Venezuela has denied, accusing the U.S. of undermining regional peace.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has publicly supported the U.S. action, stating that “drug traffickers should be dealt with violently.” In response, Venezuela’s National Assembly declared her persona non grata, prompting President Nicolás Maduro to suspend natural gas agreements with Trinidad and begin the deportation of 200 illegal immigrants from Venezuelan territory.
Cayman Islands Sends US$1.2M in Relief Aid to Jamaica After Hurricane Melissa
The Cayman Islands Government has pledged US$1.2 million in relief supplies to assist Jamaica’s recovery efforts following the catastrophic damage caused by Hurricane Melissa.
Premier André Ebanks announced during a Thursday media briefing, recalling how Jamaica had offered crucial support after Hurricane Ivan devastated the Cayman Islands years ago.
“On behalf of myself, my ministers, and the leader of the opposition, I say Cayman stands with Jamaica,” Ebanks declared.
He revealed that US$200,000 worth of supplies had already been airlifted to Kingston, with the remainder to be shipped in the coming days. The aid includes medical supplies, food, and temporary shelter materials to support communities hardest hit by the storm.
U.S. Reportedly Preparing Military Strikes on Venezuela
Meanwhile, international sources have reported that the Trump administration is preparing targeted military strikes on Venezuelan installations allegedly tied to narcotics trafficking networks.
According to the Miami Herald and Wall Street Journal, U.S. officials are finalizing plans for airstrikes against facilities used by what Washington calls the “Cartel of the Suns,” a criminal organization allegedly led by President Nicolás Maduro and senior members of his government.
The attacks could take place “within days or even hours,” sources said, as part of efforts to “decapitate” the cartel’s hierarchy. U.S. intelligence estimates that over 50 tons of cocaine are trafficked annually through the network, split between Europe and the United States.
