Haiti: Cholera Surge Fears After Hurricane Melissa

Health authorities in Haiti are warning of a potential cholera surge following Hurricane Melissa, which devastated several regions and contaminated drinking water supplies.

Over 2,900 suspected cases and 27 deaths have been reported since January. However, new spikes in areas such as Pétion-Ville and Grand-Goâve have raised fears of a broader outbreak.

Officials say the situation is worsened by insecurity, limited access to clean water, and a collapsing health infrastructure, leaving many vulnerable communities without medical support.

Trinidad & Tobago: Former Minister Warns Prime Minister

In Trinidad and Tobago, former Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Amery Browne has issued a strong warning to Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, suggesting that she could face international legal scrutiny similar to that faced by former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, Browne cautioned that leaders cannot act without consequence, stating:

“Sometimes heads of government feel they can say and do anything for their supporters to clap and cheer — but there will be consequences in the future.”

Browne’s comments come amid growing regional unease following U.S. airstrikes against alleged drug trafficking vessels in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific, which have drawn sharp criticism from the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights for allegedly violating international law.

International: Nancy Pelosi Announces Retirement

And finally, on the international scene, Former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, one of the most powerful figures in American politics, has announced she will not seek re-election and plans to retire from Congress when her current term ends in early 2027.

At 85 years old, Pelosi announced in a video addressed to her constituents in San Francisco, marking the end of a distinguished career spanning nearly four decades since her first election to Congress in 1987.

Pelosi’s departure marks the close of a historic chapter for the Democratic Party, where she served as America’s first female Speaker of the House and played a pivotal role in shaping key U.S. legislation.
