BRASILIA, Brazil — Bolsonaro Detained Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody by Federal Police, ending months of house arrest. The detention comes after Bolsonaro allegedly used a soldering iron to remove his ankle monitor, prompting authorities to deem him a flight risk as he appeals his conviction for plotting a coup.
Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered the detention, citing that a planned supporters’ vigil outside Bolsonaro’s home could undermine police monitoring efforts. Moraes also cited evidence suggesting Bolsonaro had previously considered seeking asylum in the Argentine embassy.
The former leader is now being held in a 12-square-meter room at the Federal Police headquarters in Brasilia. His defense team expressed “deep perplexity” at the order, arguing that the vigil was a religious gathering protected by the constitution. This arrest marks a significant setback for Bolsonaro, occurring shortly after his ideological ally, US President Donald Trump, rolled back tariffs that were initially intended to derail the prosecution.
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Leptospirosis Outbreak Jamaica has officially declared an outbreak of Leptospirosis, which is suspected to have caused six deaths in the wake of Hurricane Melissa.
Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton confirmed nine cases between October 30 and November 20, with an additional 28 suspected cases. Officials blame stagnant, contaminated water left behind by the Category 5 storm, which dumped 30 inches of rain on the island in late October.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease spread through water or soil contaminated by animal urine, particularly rodents. Health officials are urging the public to be vigilant, noting that while symptoms like fever and muscle aches mimic the flu, the disease can progress to fatal kidney failure, liver damage, and meningitis.
CARACAS, Venezuela — Tensions Rise with US The Venezuelan government has categorically rejected a US plan to designate the “Cartel of the Suns” as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO), calling the group “non-existent” and the move “ridiculous.”
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the impending designation, accusing high-ranking Venezuelan officials—including President Nicolás Maduro—of leading the drug trafficking ring. Maduro denies these allegations, accusing Washington of fabricating crimes to justify regime change and seize control of Venezuela’s oil reserves.
The diplomatic clash occurs amidst a massive US military buildup in the Caribbean ordered by President Donald Trump. While some fear the FTO designation could be used to justify military action, sanctions experts have stated the statute does not authorize such moves.
