Trinidad:
More than 21,000 school suspensions were recorded between 2022 and 2025 in Guyana — a statistic that High Court Judge Frank Cursad described as “alarming”. During his address at the 2025 graduation ceremony, Justice Cursad emphasized that this troubling trend reflects deep-rooted issues within homes and communities, calling for urgent educational and social reform.

“It takes a village to raise a child, and the statistics demonstrate that too many families in our republic are dysfunctional as children mirror the behavior that they see,” he said.

The judge also addressed student behavior online, urging students to “think before they post”, and highlighted the growing importance of the legal framework around misconduct in schools.

Haiti:
In Haiti, the commander of the United Nations-backed security mission, launched to combat gang violence, has renewed his call for global support. One year after the deployment of Kenyan police, the mission remains understaffed, with less than half of the intended 2,500 troops deployed.

Gang violence has displaced over 1.3 million people, worsened food insecurity, and led to the shutdown of hospitals and critical state institutions. The commander emphasized that urgent reinforcements and logistical support are crucial if Haiti is to regain any semblance of stability and governance.

Colombia:
Colombia’s Constitutional Court has halted an investigation by the Electoral Court into President Gustavo Petro, ruling that only the House of Representatives has the authority to investigate a sitting president for campaign financing irregularities. This decision effectively concludes the Electoral Court’s investigation into Petro’s 2022 campaign, sparking a fresh debate about the separation of powers and electoral accountability in the country.
