Some Migrants in Trinidad and Tobago Fearful

Just over twelve hours after the launch of the Government’s online Migrant Registration Framework (MRF), the system recorded more than 137,000 visits, according to Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander.

Speaking on Tuesday, Minister Alexander urged all migrants living in Trinidad and Tobago to come forward and register, stressing that the framework offers a layer of protection against exploitation, including abuse by employers.

As of 1:00 p.m. on Monday, official data showed that 1,611 individuals began the registration process but did not complete it, while 599 applications were fully submitted. Authorities say outreach efforts will continue to encourage completion of the process and address concerns among migrant communities.

The Prime Minister explained that while ministers are encouraged to hold regular constituency days, the town hall meetings will provide a more structured and transparent forum for dialogue. He also acknowledged the challenges ministers face in balancing public duties with constituency responsibilities.

India and EU Reach Landmark Trade Deal

India and the European Union have reached a long-awaited trade agreement that will significantly reduce tariffs on most goods, a move expected to boost two-way trade and reduce reliance on the United States amid rising global trade tensions.

Under the deal, tariffs will be eliminated or reduced on 96.6% of traded goods by value, with EU officials projecting that European exports to India could double by 2032. The agreement is also expected to save European companies approximately 4 billion euros, or US$4.75 billion, in duties.
