As Guyana joined the rest of the world in observing World Heart Day 2025, the Ministry of Health has issued a call for greater awareness and prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs).

According to the Ministry, heart attacks and strokes remain among the leading causes of death in Guyana, mirroring the global trend where nearly 17 million people die annually from cardiovascular conditions.

Health officials stressed that while progress has been made in expanding access to health services, prevention must remain the focus. Early screening, healthier lifestyles, and community-level awareness are critical to reducing the burden of heart disease and stroke.

The Ministry highlighted ongoing initiatives, including expanded access to primary health care, training of health professionals, and public education campaigns encouraging citizens to adopt heart-healthy habits such as balanced diets, regular exercise, avoiding tobacco, and reducing alcohol consumption.

As the world reflects on the impact of CVDs this World Heart Day, the Ministry reiterated its commitment to ensuring Guyanese have access to early interventions, treatment, and education to combat one of the most persistent health challenges facing the nation.
