SCHOONORD, WEST BANK DEMERARA — In a vibrant ceremony reflecting over 50 years of diplomatic ties, President Dr. Irfaan Ali officially commissioned the Guyana–China Friendship Park at Schoonord on Sunday. Spanning an impressive 66,700 square meters, the facility is being hailed as a multifunctional masterpiece that blends modern recreational technology with traditional Chinese architectural aesthetics.
The park is the result of 18 months of intensive construction by Chinese firms and stands as a major gift to the people of Guyana as the nation prepares for its 60th Independence Anniversary.
A Fusion of Culture and Leisure
The park’s design is a deliberate nod to the “shared history” between the two nations, offering a unique environment for the residents of the rapidly expanding West Bank corridor.
- Architectural Highlights: The space features authentic Chinese-style pavilions, beautifully integrated with local Guyanese flora.
- Modern Amenities: The facility includes high-standard sports facilities, a dedicated children’s activity center, and a state-of-the-art open-air theater area for cultural performances.
- Durability and Tech: Constructed with advanced materials and high construction standards, the park is designed to be a “sustainable landmark” for the Schoonord community.
President Ali: Building “Faster, Greater, and Better”
During his feature address, President Ali moved beyond the physical structures, describing the park as a “ledger of live history.”
- Historical Reflection: The President paid tribute to the early Chinese immigrants, noting that despite their small numbers, their impact on Guyana’s economic and social fabric has been profound.
- Beyond Diplomatic Letters: “Let us build friendship written not in diplomatic letters alone, but in the ledger of live history,” Ali stated, urging both nations to collaborate with a sense of urgency.
- The Development Roadmap: The Head of State used the platform to highlight the “industrial explosion” planned for Region 3, including:
- The Wales Industrial Estate and Gas Processing Plant.
- A proposed Data Center and Fertilizer Plant.
- A new National Stadium for the West Bank.
- Possible plans for a regional domestic airport.
The “Belt and Road” Impact
China’s Ambassador to Guyana, Guo Haiyan, emphasized that the park is a “tangible result” of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which has seen China invest heavily in Guyana’s infrastructure.
- Infrastructure Milestone: The Ambassador pointed to other flagship projects currently underway, including the New Demerara River Bridge and the construction of six regional hospitals.
- Pragmatic Cooperation: She expressed confidence that the park will improve the “well-being of the Guyanese people,” serving as a constant reminder of the mutual efforts between Georgetown and Beijing.
A Gateway to the West
As the West Bank of Demerara undergoes a massive housing and industrial boom, the Guyana–China Friendship Park serves as the “green lung” of the new Schoonord. For the thousands of families moving into the region, it represents a shift toward a modern, balanced lifestyle where high-tech development meets cultural leisure. As President Ali noted, the task now is to build “faster”—and with this park, the foundation for the West Bank’s future has been firmly laid.
