GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed has formally invited A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Leader Aubrey Norton to face-to-face discussions to resolve disagreements surrounding opposition representation on the Local Government Commission (LGC), while signaling that broader governance matters affecting the parliamentary opposition must also be placed on the table.
In a formal letter dated August 20, 2026, Mohamed affirmed that his party, We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), remains open to “constructive engagement” with APNU and other parliamentary opposition groups in the national interest.
In-Person Meeting Proposed for Providence
The outreach comes after APNU called for a reconsideration of nominees submitted for the Local Government Commission, citing concerns over political imbalance and representation among non-governmental parliamentary seats.
Rather than conducting the exchange strictly via correspondence, Mohamed invited Norton and an APNU delegation to an in-person meeting:
- Date & Time: Monday, August 24, 2026, at 11:00 AM.
- Venue: WIN Party Headquarters, Serenity Court, Green Acres, Providence, East Bank Demerara.
Expanding the Agenda Beyond Local Government
Mohamed proposed that the discussions extend beyond the LGC to address wider institutional matters affecting democratic balance and opposition cooperation:
- Electoral Scrutineers & Representation: Reviewing the selection of the three opposition-nominated commissioners serving on the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) and the deployment of field scrutineers during registration exercises. For official guidelines, updates, and organizational details, consult the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Portal.
- Regional Council Leadership: Resolving internal opposition coordination regarding the election of the Chairman and Vice-Chairman for the Region Ten (Upper Demerara-Berbice) Regional Democratic Council (RDC).
Precedents of Inter-Party Parliamentary Cooperation
Highlighting prior collaboration between the two opposition groups, Mohamed pointed out that WIN previously facilitated APNU’s involvement across key parliamentary committees:
- Sectoral Committees: Providing alternate member arrangements for APNU on the Economic Services Committee and the Foreign Relations Committee.
- Committee Leadership: Supporting APNU in securing the Vice-Chairmanship of the Natural Resources Committee.
Mohamed stated that these arrangements reflect WIN’s willingness to partner with APNU to strengthen institutional oversight, noting that he is awaiting Norton’s formal confirmation to finalize the meeting arrangements.
