GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — The Guyana Public Service Co-operative Credit Union (GPSCCU) officially marked its 62nd anniversary today, Monday, March 2, 2026. Born out of the historic 90-day strike of 1964, the institution has evolved from a grassroots support system for debt-laden workers into one of the nation’s most formidable and wealthiest financial cooperatives.
The anniversary celebrations centered on a theme of gratitude and modernization, featuring a commemorative church service and the debut of a new corporate jingle.
A Legacy of “Thrift and Support”
In a special anniversary message, CEO Christopher Thompson reflected on the credit union’s origins. Established in 1964, the GPSCCU was designed to promote thrift and provide a financial safety net for public servants during one of the most turbulent periods in Guyana’s labor history.
- Sustainability: The organization has maintained a consistent focus on member welfare, significantly expanding its asset base over six decades.
- Service-First Mandate: During the anniversary church service, the presiding pastor reminded the congregation that the credit union’s primary purpose remains serving its members’ needs above all else.
The Digital Leap: 2024–2026
While honoring its past, the GPSCCU is firmly focused on the future. Following a major Digital Transformation drive launched in April 2024, the credit union has successfully modernized its service delivery.
- Online Banking: Members now enjoy real-time access to their accounts through a dedicated digital platform.
- Efficiency: The transition to e-statements and online loan payment systems has drastically reduced wait times and administrative overhead, bringing the 62-year-old institution into the modern banking era.
Anniversary Highlights
To mark the occasion, the GPSCCU introduced a new anniversary jingle, designed to resonate with both long-standing members and the younger generation of public servants entering the workforce.
