GECOM EXTENDS HOURS FOR CLAIMS AND OBJECTIONS EXERCISE TO ACCOMMODATE VOTER REGISTRATION

Georgetown, Guyana — June 14, 2025

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) is preparing for a busy few days as it gears up for its latest Claims and Objections Exercise, which begins on Monday, June 16. While the claims portion of the exercise runs for just three days—ending on June 18—GECOM is already expecting a rush of citizens hoping to update or correct their voter information in time for the 2025 General and Regional Elections.

To make the process more accessible, GECOM has extended the closing hours for registration offices across the country. From June 16 to 18, offices will open from 8:00 a.m. and remain open until 8:00 p.m.—two hours later than initially scheduled.

The extension is aimed at accommodating the expected surge in activity during the short window available for claims. “We’re anticipating that a large number of eligible persons will want to come in, and we want to ensure everyone has a fair chance to complete their transactions,” a GECOM representative said.

Eligible persons include Guyanese citizens who will be 18 years or older by June 30, 2025. This also includes citizens by birth, descent, or naturalization, as well as Commonwealth citizens who have been living in Guyana for at least one year. Those eligible can make a claim to be added to the Official List of Electors (OLE) if their name does not already appear.

In addition to new registrations, the exercise allows persons already on the Preliminary List of Electors (PLE) to apply for changes. These include updating a residential address, correcting inaccurate personal information, or applying to update a name in cases where it has changed since the person last registered.

GECOM is urging all eligible voters to visit the registration office responsible for the area where they live to ensure their information is accurate and up to date.

The Claims and Objections Exercise plays a key role in the integrity of the upcoming elections, and GECOM’s move to extend the hours reflects both the urgency and importance of the process.

For many, especially those with work or personal commitments during regular hours, the evening extension provides a welcome opportunity to take part in shaping the electoral roll ahead of what is expected to be a pivotal election year.
