Guyana – From humble beginnings to the national stage, political scientist and commentator Dr. David Hinds has now taken his seat in Parliament, following in the footsteps of party stalwarts such as Dr. Walter Rodney, Hugh Desmond Hoyte, and Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine.
Dr. Hinds, long known for his sharp political analyses and activism, said he enters the National Assembly with an open mind and a commitment to meaningful service.
“I don’t know what to expect, because our Parliament has become very unparliamentary… but I am not going there to curse down anybody. I intend to deviate from that,” he told Nightly News.
Hinds emphasized that a strong society depends on the strength of its institutions, and Parliament, as one of the three pillars of governance, must function at its optimum. His mission, he said, is to use his academic expertise, decades of political experience, and voice to lift ordinary Guyanese out of poverty.
Rejecting criticisms that his appointment is symbolic, Hinds was clear:
“Persons who believe I am there for cosmetic change should think again. I will endeavor to bring fundamental change in Guyana. We want to know how this fast-growing economy can translate into change in people’s lives. How can 46% of people living in poverty be lifted out of poverty?”
Identifying himself as a left-of-center reformist, Hinds said his focus will be on democracy, inclusion, and equity, with a passion to ensure the benefits of growth reach every Guyanese household.
