Over 80 Prosthetic Limbs to be Fitted Under India–CARICOM Health Initiative

Guyana — Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, has announced that more than one-third of prosthetic limbs planned for fitting under the inaugural India–CARICOM Prosthetic Limbs Camp have already been successfully completed. Speaking at the launch, Dr. Anthony noted that at least 50 additional fittings are expected before the camp concludes.

The camp, he explained, goes beyond providing equipment by ensuring recipients receive personalized fitting, training, and adjustment to help them adapt to their new prosthetics.

“This is not a one-off arrangement. We want this to be a continuous engagement so that more and more people can benefit,” Dr. Anthony emphasized.

The Health Minister highlighted the importance of the initiative, pointing out that prosthetic limbs often cost upwards of $400,000, a figure that puts them out of reach for many persons living with disabilities.

Meanwhile, India’s High Commissioner to Guyana, Dr. Amit Telang, reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Guyana and the wider region. He revealed that the program has already drawn requests from other CARICOM member states.

“This is not just a medical initiative but also about forging closer partnerships between India and this region,” Dr. Telang said.

The prosthetic limb camp, launched earlier this year, is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Health, the High Commission of India, and CARICOM, marking a significant step in advancing both regional healthcare access and international cooperation.
