St. Stanislaus College—one of Guyana’s most prestigious secondary institutions—has received a significant boost to its academic development following a generous contribution from one of its distinguished alumni.
Dr. Loren (Lauren) Miller, who first entered St. Stanislaus College in 1976, returned to his alma mater on Thursday with a heartfelt mission: to give back to the school that shaped his early academic journey.
Dr. Miller, who travelled from Canada with his family, donated $2.2 million toward improving the academic programmes at the institution. Additionally, he announced full scholarships for two students, covering books, uniforms, fees, and other educational expenses from Forms 1 through 5.
Dr. Miller said his time at St. Stanislaus laid the foundation that allowed him to achieve academic and professional success, noting that his contribution and scholarship pledge were meant to support current students in realizing their full potential.
The gesture was warmly welcomed by the school’s Headteacher, Ms. Roxanne Ross, who noted that contributions of this magnitude strengthen the institution’s commitment to academic excellence.
Ms. Ross praised Dr. Miller’s generosity, stating that the donation will support ongoing developmental initiatives and serves as a testament to the lasting relationship between St. Stanislaus and its alumni community.
Dr. David Singh, Chairman of the Board of Governors, also expressed appreciation on behalf of the college.
He noted that the contribution comes at a significant time, as St. Stanislaus College prepares to celebrate its 150th anniversary.
Founded on May 1, 1866, as an all-boys Catholic grammar school operated by the Jesuits, St. Stanislaus—fondly known as “Saints”—has since grown into one of Georgetown’s top co-educational secondary institutions.
Dr. Miller’s philanthropic commitment, school officials say, reinforces the enduring legacy of Saints alumni and serves as an inspiring example for both past and current students.
