GEORGETOWN, GUYANA โ
As Guyana celebrates its 59th anniversary of independence, Opposition Member of Parliament Annette Ferguson has urged citizens to reflect not just on the nationโs achievements but also on unfinished justice and deep-seated inequities.
In an exclusive interview with HGPTV Nightly News, MP Ferguson referenced the unresolved case of Ariana Younge, calling it a symbol of injustice in modern Guyana.
โRather than allowing the family to get justice, we see exactly all the machinations being played out by this regime,โ Ferguson stated.
While acknowledging Guyanaโs impressive stridesโparticularly in the oil and gas sectorโMP Ferguson said not all Guyanese are benefiting from the nationโs oil wealth.
โAs a nation blessed by oil resources, not all Guyanese are enjoying this patrimony,โ she declared, accusing the current Peopleโs Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) administration of enriching โfriends, family, croniesโand even themselves.โ
She highlighted that both public and private sector workers continue to struggle despite the country earning billions in oil revenue.
Ferguson criticized what she termed a โparliamentary dictatorship,โ accusing the government of excluding the opposition from consultations on critical national matters.
โYes, the government might be preaching democracy, but in 59 years we see how Parliament is being managedโespecially under the current Speaker,โ she said.
Looking ahead to the September 1, 2025 elections, Ferguson called on Guyanese to vote for change and cited the governmentโs handling of the Venezuelan border threat as inadequate.
โRather than ensuring citizens are protected from Venezuelaโs aggression, the government has mishandled the situation,โ she asserted.
She ended with a call to action:
โIn this 59th year as an independent nation, we must go to the polls knowing we need to rid ourselves of the PPP/C.โ
