Despite persistent rainfall on Sunday, President Irfaan Ali, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, led Guyana’s 2025 Remembrance Day observance at the War Memorial Cenotaph in Georgetown — paying solemn tribute to those who gave their lives in the cause of peace and freedom.
The ceremony, marked by military precision and reflection, brought together members of the Joint Services, government officials, diplomats, and relatives of fallen soldiers.
In his address, President Ali honoured the courage and sacrifice of Guyanese who served during the First and Second World Wars, urging citizens to preserve the legacy of peace they fought to secure.
“We are indebted forever to them for their supreme sacrifice in the cause of peace and freedom. We recall with eternal gratitude those who have made similar personal sacrifices in the continuing struggle for human dignity, liberty, equity, and social justice,” the President said.
He also extended appreciation to the men and women currently serving in the Guyana Defence Force and other security agencies, recognising their role in protecting Guyana’s sovereignty.
“We thank them, we salute them, and we are encouraged by their example to strengthen our resolve to preserve the peace within our borders and to keep this peace for generations to come,” he expressed.
The President further called for global unity in defending democracy and justice, urging world leaders to work toward a future built on mutual respect and freedom.
“We must protect our next generation and allow them to grow in a world of honour, freedom, and dignity,” he affirmed.
The ceremony concluded with the laying of wreaths, led by President Ali, followed by representatives from the diplomatic corps, the judiciary, and the Joint Services.
Remembrance Day — observed annually on November 11 — stands as a solemn reminder of the human cost of war and the enduring value of peace.
