EDUCATION MINISTER CALLS FOR GREATER ACCOUNTABILITY FROM TEACHERS

By Jayda Jeune – HGP Nightly News

Minister of Education, Sonia Parag, is urging teachers across Guyana to demonstrate greater accountability after her recent school visits revealed worrying levels of absenteeism.

According to the Minister, too many classrooms are being left unattended, resulting in students losing valuable instructional hours. She stressed that while the government continues to invest heavily in the education sector, the dedication of teachers remains critical to ensuring that students receive the quality learning experience they deserve.

Minister Parag underscored that absenteeism undermines not only classroom performance but also the broader goal of raising national education standards. She indicated that mechanisms will be strengthened to monitor teacher attendance and ensure that corrective measures are taken where necessary.

The Education Ministry has pledged to continue providing professional support, training, and improved working conditions for teachers, but Minister Parag emphasized that accountability must remain at the heart of the teaching profession.
