GEORGETOWN – The already volatile landscape of Guyana’s incoming political opposition has fractured yet again, with Dr. Mark France resigning as Chairman of A New and United Guyana (ANUG). Dr. France’s shock departure, formalized in a letter dated October 11, 2025, stems from irreconcilable conflicts over the party’s contentious pre-election alliance with the newcomer We the People Initiative Network (WIN) Party.
Dr. France, whose resignation letter was addressed to ANUG General Secretary Jonathan Subrian, cited the “non-adherence of WIN to the agreed terms of their election partnership” as the core reason that made it impossible for him to continue in an official capacity. This refers to the highly disputed allocation of parliamentary seats following the 2025 elections, where WIN allegedly failed to honor the terms of their agreement, despite securing 16 seats.
The outgoing Chairman stated that WIN’s unilateral selection of an ANUG member for a parliamentary seat put him in “personal conflict with the collective decision of ANUG’s executive.” He declared that his continued views would be “more of a hindrance to the arrangement,” and therefore, stepping down was “in the best interest of ANUG and in keeping with democratic principles.”
Dr. France took full personal responsibility for any fallout resulting from the collaboration during his tenure, a clear signal of his disapproval of the alliance’s final outcome.
While he pledged continued loyalty to ANUG “in whatever capacity possible,” his high-profile resignation has deepened internal reflection within the party, highlighting the extreme difficulty small parties face when navigating the high-stakes, ruthless nature of coalition politics.
