WPA Pushes for Stronger Child Protection Laws After Adriana Young’s Death

When the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) enters Parliament, its representative, Dr. David Hinds, says one of the party’s top priorities will be to strengthen laws protecting Guyana’s children.
Dr. Hinds highlighted the tragic death of 11-year-old Adriana Young, who was found dead at the Double Day Hotel in Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo on April 24, 2025, as a painful reminder of the gaps in the system.
“Adriana Young’s murder brings into full view the dangers facing our young people and the urgent need to strengthen laws to protect children in this society,” Dr. Hinds declared.
No Accountability to Date
Months after the child’s death, no one has been held accountable. Dr. Hinds described this as “a burning shame”, criticizing the pace and seriousness of investigations into such high-profile cases.
“It seems as if the law is protecting those who go after children. We keep reading about abductions and abuse, but we don’t see the urgency and earnestness required to deal with them,” he said.
WPA’s Parliamentary Agenda
Dr. Hinds stressed that while Adriana Young’s case may fade from headlines, the larger issue of child protection remains alive. The WPA intends to pursue reforms that ensure children are better safeguarded under Guyanese law.
“The Adriana Young issue for us is not dead. Even if attention on her case has subsided, the fight for stronger protection of children is one the WPA will not abandon,” Dr. Hinds affirmed.
The call for reform adds to growing public pressure for accountability and stronger mechanisms to protect minors from abuse, abduction, and exploitation.
