Day 33 of the high-profile Election Fraud Trial resumed on Wednesday before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where the video interview of former Chief Election Officer (CEO) Keith Lowenfield was played.
The recording, lasting several hours, showed Lowenfield largely remaining silent while being informed that the Guyana Police Force had taken over the investigation. During the interview, officers posed several questions about his alleged role in the disputed March 2020 General and Regional Elections.
Defense Attorney Nigel Hughes, appearing on behalf of Attorney Eusi Anderson, objected to the playing of another video interview involving Enrique Livan, claiming Livan’s lawyer was asked to leave during that session.
Testifying for the prosecution, Detective Sergeant Alwin Jones said that in 2020 he was attached to the CID’s Crime Laboratory, where he conducted multiple recorded interviews tied to the election probe. He confirmed recording Livan’s interview on August 30, 2020, Lowenfield’s on September 26, 2020, and Carol Smith-Joseph’s on September 29, 2020—each in the presence of legal counsel.
The case, stemming from allegations of conspiracy to defraud during the 2020 elections, involves multiple former GECOM officials and political operatives. The prosecution has so far indicated plans to call approximately 73 witnesses before the trial concludes.
The matter is scheduled to continue on Thursday.
