CORRUPTION MUST BE DEALT WITH FIRMLY, THIS IS THE MOMENT FOR DECISIVE LEADERSHIP – WALROND WARNS GPF

The integrity of Guyana’s police force is under the spotlight as Home Affairs Minister Oneidge Walrond issues a stern warning to the leadership of the Guyana Police Force (GPF).

On Wednesday, Minister Walrond told the Force’s Executive Leadership Team and Commanders that misconduct and weak discipline will no longer be tolerated. She stressed that despite record government investments in infrastructure, mobility, technology, and training since 2020, these resources mean little without integrity, accountability, and firm leadership.

Calling corruption a direct threat to national security, the Minister urged commanders to deal with wrongdoing decisively: “Corruption must be dealt with firmly. Show zero tolerance. Do not look the other way. Be fearless in confronting it.”

She further warned that weak discipline at the top would collapse the chain of command and erode credibility, adding: “Leadership must be by example. If discipline is weak at the top, it will collapse below.”

Walrond also pointed to new security challenges such as border protection, cybercrime, and the demands of a growing economy, urging the GPF to ensure resources translate into safer communities and renewed public trust.

Affirming her ministry’s full support, Walrond declared: “This is the moment for decisive leadership. The people will not wait, and neither will I.”
