CONSTITUTIONAL REFORM URGENTLY NEEDED AT GECOM AMID DISPUTE WHETHER OPPOSITION COMMISSIONERS SHOULD STEP DOWN

WIN Leader Azruddin Mohamed Calls for Opposition GECOM Commissioners to Resign

By Antonio Dey | HGP Nightly News.

Opposition Leader and head of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, Azruddin Mohamed, has called for the resignation of opposition-appointed members of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM). His party, now the main parliamentary opposition with 16 seats, argues that WIN should rightfully occupy those roles, given that the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has 12 seats.

However, long-serving opposition-nominated commissioner Vincent Alexander dismissed the suggestion, noting that the issue is constitutional rather than partisan. He emphasized that pursuing resignations would only repeat “the same corrupted and dysfunctional approach” unless comprehensive constitutional reform is prioritized.

When asked why opposition commissioners did not resign before the 2025 elections despite concerns over irregularities, Alexander responded that such a move would not have had any real impact, since procedural loopholes allow GECOM to function with or without a full quorum.

Meanwhile, APNU Leader Aubrey Norton expressed reluctance to back Mohamed’s call, stating that the commissioners are permanent appointments. Citing Articles 225 and 226 of the Constitution, Norton stressed that removal is only possible in cases of incapacity or misconduct, and that “as far as I’m aware, there’s nobody with the authority to remove anybody from the commission.”

Norton further pointed out that the current structure of GECOM remains problematic, as the chair’s casting vote usually aligns with the government, effectively leaving opposition commissioners sidelined.
