That was among the major recommendations of the Carter Centre, which released its preliminary report on Guyana’s just-concluded General and Regional Elections.
The observer mission noted that while polling day was generally smooth, the current structure of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) poses significant challenges. According to the report, the political composition of the commission undermines public trust and weakens confidence in the institution.
The Carter Centre has therefore recommended a new composition of GECOM that includes apolitical and independent individuals, to foster greater accountability and improve citizens’ active participation in the electoral process.
Other recommendations in the report emphasized the need for constitutional reform, campaign financing laws, and measures to reduce political influence in the management of elections.
