CARELESS DISPOSAL OF CIGARETTE BUTT SUSPECTED TO CAUSE FIRE AT THE QUAMINA GUEST HOUSE

“A Single Cigarette”

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — The mystery surrounding the rapid destruction of the historic Quamina Guest House has taken a definitive turn. Sources close to the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) investigation have revealed that the massive early morning blaze on Wednesday was likely sparked by the careless disposal of a cigarette butt.

Preliminary findings suggest that the discarded cigarette ignited a mattress inside one of the rooms at 126 Quamina Street, triggering a fire that the decades-old wooden structure simply could not withstand.

From a Spark to a Total Loss

The fire, which erupted in the pre-dawn hours of March 25, 2026, quickly escalated from a smoldering mattress to an all-consuming inferno.

  • The Ignition Point: Investigators believe the lit cigarette was left unattended on or near bedding, providing the perfect fuel for a fast-moving fire within the timber-framed building.
  • The Spread: Due to the age of the wood and the open-plan nature of parts of the guest house, the flames engulfed the entire structure before residents could intervene, also destroying several businesses on the ground floor.

A Family Legacy Reduced to Ash

Property owner Patrick John, who has been left devastated by the loss, previously recounted being jolted awake by “unusual noises” from his nearby residence. By the time he looked out, the building his family had owned since 1964 was already a wall of fire.

“It carries deep sentimental value… it’s been in my family for over 60 years. To see it go like this is hard to describe.”Patrick John, Owner

While John lauded the Guyana Fire Service for their “swift and professional” response in preventing the fire from leaping to neighboring colonial homes, the Guest House itself was beyond saving.
