BUDGET 2026 SET FOR JANUARY 26 AS GOVERNMENT MOVES TO TURN ‘CAMPAIGN PROMISES INTO POLICY’

HGP Nightly News – Guyana’s first national budget since the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) secured re-election will be laid before the National Assembly on January 26, 2026, with the government signalling that the fiscal plan will serve as the engine for delivering on its 2025 campaign promises.

The announcement was made on Monday by Senior Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh, who said Budget 2026 is intended to translate the ruling party’s manifesto commitments into concrete programmes and measurable outcomes for citizens.

According to the Finance Minister, the budget is firmly anchored in the platform presented to voters ahead of last year’s elections, which outlined what he described as a comprehensive strategy to advance national transformation and expand opportunities across all sectors of society. He noted that the manifesto laid the foundation for policies aimed at long-term development while ensuring that ordinary Guyanese benefit directly from the country’s rapid economic expansion.

Budget 2026 is expected to operationalise several key initiatives outlined by President Irfaan Ali during his national address in December 2025. These include measures to stimulate economic diversification and job creation through tax-free incentives for high-quality employment in special development zones, as well as expanded housing support designed to help families build or upgrade their homes.

The government has also reiterated its commitment to direct financial support for citizens, including the universal $100,000 cash grant, increases in pensions and public assistance, and targeted relief for vulnerable groups. Additional measures are expected to support childcare and elderly care services through tax incentives for private-sector providers, along with financial backing for institutions involved in animal welfare.

Dr. Singh emphasised that human development remains the central focus of the upcoming budget, with policies designed to improve livelihoods, expand access to opportunity, and ensure that growth is not confined to macroeconomic indicators. “The Guyana we are building is one where every citizen has the opportunity to uplift themselves,” the Finance Minister said, stressing that the fiscal plan is intended to create pathways for personal and economic advancement.

With the budget presentation now scheduled, Budget 2026 is shaping up as a defining moment for the government, as it seeks to demonstrate that record levels of national growth can be converted into tangible improvements in the daily lives of Guyanese families.
