BARTICA, REGION SEVEN – Bartica, long known as the “gateway to the interior,” is poised for a major transformation with the planned construction of a world-class tourism marina in the heart of the gold-mining town.
President Irfaan Ali made the announcement on Sunday during a visit to the Region 7 community, noting that Guyana must now focus on building large-scale waterfront facilities that can serve multiple regions and integrate water transport into the national system.
“We don’t have the land and water frontage to build 10 or 12 individual waterfront facilities anymore. We have to build massive facilities to support development across the different regions,” Ali explained.
Tourism and Economic Benefits
The marina is expected to feature modern amenities blended with sustainable architecture, reinforcing Bartica’s role as a hub for travel to destinations such as the Essequibo River islands, Kaieteur Falls, and other interior attractions.
According to the president, the project will boost tourism, create jobs, and stimulate local business activity.
Part of a Bigger Plan
The marina forms part of the government’s broader infrastructure and tourism strategy aimed at positioning Guyana as a leading travel destination while ensuring that hinterland and riverine communities benefit from new investments.
Construction timelines and design details are expected to be announced in the coming months.
