As Guyana’s oil production continues to expand, the Office of the Auditor General is moving to strengthen its skills and capacity to effectively audit offshore activities.
Auditor General Deodat Sharma explained that with billions of dollars in revenue expected from the petroleum sector, there is a growing need for greater transparency and accountability in how resources are managed. He said his office is taking steps to enhance technical expertise to ensure that audits keep pace with the complex nature of offshore oil and gas operations.
Sharma emphasized that Guyana cannot afford to lag behind in oversight, given the scale of investment and the potential risks associated with the petroleum sector. He noted that international collaboration, training, and specialized tools are being explored to strengthen audit capacity.
The Auditor General reiterated his commitment to safeguarding public resources while ensuring that oil wealth translates into long-term benefits for all Guyanese.
