Aubrey Barker Road Project Still Incomplete, Sparks Frustration

Significant sections of the $1.45 billion Aubrey Barker Road project remain unfinished, drawing sharp criticism from residents and opposition figures alike.
Former Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, in an exclusive interview with Nightly News, accused the government of failing to deliver major infrastructure projects to the satisfaction of the people.
Large portions of the roadway are still covered in loam and crush-and-run aggregate, despite rehabilitation works beginning in 2022. The project, which runs through South Ruimveldt in Georgetown and connects to the Ogle–Eccles Highway, was expected to be completed by 2023.
Councillor for Constituency Four, Kibwe Copeland, said the protracted works have caused major inconvenience for both motorists and residents. He pointed to deteriorating roads in New Cummings Park, poor maintenance, and sections where good streets were narrowed, making access to driveways difficult.
Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill, however, has assured that the project is still ongoing and nearing completion.
Last year, frustrated residents staged fiery protests over the road’s deplorable condition, prompting the Guyana Fire Service to intervene and Deputy Police Commander Michael Kingston to negotiate with the community.
