Annandale Residents Decry Neglected Cricket Ground Amid Youth Concerns

ANNANDALE, EAST COAST DEMERARA – Residents of Annandale are raising alarm over the deplorable condition of their community cricket ground, expressing fears that the lack of recreational infrastructure is contributing to rising youth delinquency, including drug use.
Speaking anonymously to HGPTV Nightly News on Monday, concerned residents said the facility has fallen into disrepair, with overgrown bushes taking over the once-vibrant space.
“A lot of youths… they don’t have no recreation. The cricket ground done finish,” one resident lamented.
Broken Promises?
Community members revealed that Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., had visited the area and promised to rehabilitate the ground. Still, to date, no visible work has started.
“He come here and said he gon fix it… but look at it. Nothing ain’t happen,” another resident shared.
Despite repeated attempts by this newscast to contact the Minister for a response, calls went unanswered and unreturned.
Questions Over Funding and Transparency
Sources familiar with the project told HGPTV that the ground was scheduled for rehabilitation six months ago, with a reported budget of GY$140 million.
Allegations have also surfaced that contractors hired for the project are closely linked to the government, raising concerns over transparency and possible favoritism.
Community Impact
Locals are warning that the delay has broader social consequences. With few alternatives for recreation, idle youths are increasingly turning to negative outlets, including the use of illegal substances.
Residents Call for Urgent Action
Community members are urging the government to deliver on its promise, stating that reviving the cricket ground is critical to improving youth engagement, public safety, and community pride.
HGP Nightly News will continue to monitor this story and seek responses from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.
