ALP LEADER ADDRESSES NAMING OF THE DEMERARA HARBOUR BRIDGE, NATIONAL UNITY, AND THE STATE OF POLITICAL COALITIONS

Leader of the Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity (ALP), Simona Brooms, has praised the government’s continued efforts in infrastructural development, particularly the opening of the new Demerara River Bridge. However, she has voiced strong disapproval of the decision to name the new structure, describing it as “immature and divisive.”

Brooms reminded the public that major infrastructure projects such as the expansion of the East Bank and East Coast highways, as well as early planning for the new bridge, began under the previous coalition administration.

While acknowledging the bridge’s importance, Brooms noted that the rollout could have been better managed, stating, “Change brings delays, but not mediocre ones.” She emphasized the need for comprehensive planning and public collaboration to ensure sustainable national development.

On the political front, the ALP leader cautioned against actions that deepen national division, stressing that naming major national projects should promote unity, not political allegiance.

“We are already too divided. If we really love this country, consideration must be given to all the people—not just some,” Brooms said.

She reiterated her call for political maturity, accountability, and unity, adding, “We can’t continue to divide a country and say, ‘I’m in power and this is how it will go.’ We’ve got to find common ground.”

Brooms concluded by reaffirming her support for the new bridge as a positive development milestone, but maintained that decisions surrounding its naming should reflect inclusivity and national pride.
