ALLEGED SEXUAL MISCONDUCT AT POLICE TRAINING ACADEMY, FILE STILL WITH THE POLICE OPR, SAYS MINISTER WALROND

Months after multiple female recruits at the Guyana Police Force Training Academy reported incidents of sexual misconduct by their superiors, Minister of Home Affairs Onge Walrond has confirmed that the investigation remains active and that the implicated officers have been removed from the academy.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Minister Walrond revealed that the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) is handling the probe, which involves one officer and three sergeants accused of inappropriate behavior toward female recruits.

“Those officers are currently being disciplined. Their matters are before the OPR,” the Minister stated.

The allegations surfaced in October 2025, prompting the immediate transfer of the four officers from the Georgetown Training Academy. According to the Minister, decisive action was taken as soon as the reports reached her attention.

“They were removed immediately. As soon as the reports came to our attention, it was dealt with,” Walrond affirmed.

A statement previously issued by the Guyana Police Force confirmed that Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken had ordered a full investigation into the claims. Since then, academy staff and recruits have provided detailed statements to assist the OPR’s inquiry.

The Ministry has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for sexual misconduct within law enforcement ranks, emphasizing that such behavior undermines discipline, professionalism, and public trust in the force.
