ALLEGED BRIBERY AT CJIA, DPP ORDERS FURTHER PROBE

DPP Orders Further Probe Into Alleged Bribery at CJIA — Two Police Ranks Transferred

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has instructed that further investigations be carried out into an alleged bribery incident involving two police officers stationed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).

The allegations stem from a report that, on September 27, 2025, an inspector and a junior rank attached to the Guyana Police Force’s Narcotics Branch allegedly accepted money from a female passenger in exchange for allowing her to travel with frozen food items.

The Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) conducted a preliminary investigation and forwarded the case file to the DPP for legal advice. After reviewing the file, the DPP has ordered additional inquiries, which are now in progress.

Both officers have since been transferred from CJIA to the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) pending the outcome of the probe.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) publicly confirmed the incident on September 28, revealing that CCTV footage and other evidence suggest the officers solicited money from the passenger to release her items.

In response, the Government of Guyana has directed that all law enforcement officers operating at ports of entry—including airports and border posts—must wear body cameras to enhance transparency and accountability.

The GPF reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy toward corruption, stating:

“Any officer found guilty of extortion or bribery will face the full force of the law.”

Authorities further reminded the public that no payment is required to clear lawful goods at CJIA or any other port of entry. They urged citizens to report any requests for money to the nearest police station or airport authority.
