The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) says all is in place for the disciplined services to cast their ballots on Friday, August 22. Deputy Chief Election Officer Anil Giddings told reporters that logistical arrangements have been finalized and nothing, short of force majeure, can prevent the conduct of the poll.
A total of 10,481 members of the disciplined services are eligible to vote ahead of the national polling day. Giddings disclosed that 92 individuals stationed at 20 diplomatic missions are also listed to vote, with returns already received from two overseas locations. He assured that these ballots are in secure custody, sealed, and witnessed by agents of contesting political parties.
As for interior locations, Giddings explained that ballot boxes will be transported—mostly by air—between polling sites to accommodate voting across 83 areas with just six to seven boxes.
Traditionally, members of the disciplined services vote early so they can perform their duties to maintain law and order on the official election day.
