GEORGETOWN – The Alliance For Change (AFC) has publicly addressed the high-profile arrest of former Member of Parliament (MP) Devin Sears, who was detained with over 300 kilograms of marijuana, asserting the party’s faith in the presumption of innocence despite the massive drug bust.
The AFC released a formal statement acknowledging media reports regarding the arrest of Sears and a passenger at the Bamia Police Checkpoint. The party pointedly noted a key detail from the police report: the other individual in the vehicle with Mr. Sears has taken ownership of the suspected marijuana, even as Sears remains in police custody.
While Sears remains an active member of the AFC, the party emphasized that all persons are legally “entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law.” The statement stressed the AFC’s unwavering commitment to the rule of law, expressing full trust that authorities will conduct a “fair, transparent, and impartial investigation” into the matter.
The AFC used the opportunity to reaffirm its core values, stating it does not condone any act that contravenes the laws of Guyana or undermines public trust. The party concluded by extending its support to Sears as he faces the challenges before him, urging the public and media to refrain from speculation that could prejudice the investigation’s outcome.
