Wales Gas-to-Energy Project Nears Key Milestones

Georgetown, Guyana – Major components of the 300-megawatt Wales Gas-to-Energy Project are steadily advancing, with the completed gas pipeline ready to deliver natural gas once the power plant becomes operational, and the near-finished transmission line already in place.
Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips visited the Region Three site to assess progress, noting that the third phase—currently underway—focuses on pouring the concrete foundations for mounting gas turbines.
“This is perhaps the most important and complex part of the project,” the Prime Minister stated in a release from the Office of the Prime Minister.
Phillips highlighted Guyana’s growing electricity demand, which rose from 180 megawatts in September 2024 to 221 megawatts in September 2025. He stressed that demand will rise even further by 2026, making the project central to Guyana’s development as it supports housing, schools, hospitals, and other infrastructure.
Once completed in 2026, the plant is projected to reduce electricity costs by 50%.
The 300MW plant is now 78% complete, with the overall project at 68% completion. Contractor Lindsea is scheduled to pour the second foundation on September 22, with the third and fourth foundations to follow at 7–10 day intervals.
The facility will feature a combined-cycle system, including four 57MW gas turbines and two steam turbines, working together to deliver the full 300MW capacity. Lindsea has committed to a 120-day timeline to complete all foundation works and plans to increase its workforce to meet deadlines.
