The newly constructed Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court, valued at $178 million, was officially commissioned on Wednesday in Region Two, Pomeroon-Supenaam. The modern facility is expected to significantly improve access to justice for residents on the Essequibo Coast and surrounding areas.
Delivering the feature address, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, emphasized that the initiative reflects the government’s strong commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that the judiciary is adequately equipped to serve all Guyanese.
“Access to justice is as important as any other right or entitlement of the human being. Without justice, without law, without order — nothing is possible,” Nandlall stated.
He noted that the new court stands on par with similar state-of-the-art facilities in Georgetown, Port Kaituma, and other judicial districts. The Attorney General also highlighted that this development is part of a broader strategy to partner with the judiciary in expanding physical infrastructure and modernizing the justice system.
Beyond physical structures, the government’s investments include:
- Digitized case management systems
- Remote hearing capabilities
- E-filing mechanisms
- Courtroom audio-visual technologies
- Recruitment for key judicial and administrative posts
These measures aim to enhance efficiency, strengthen case resolution, and ensure equal access to justice before the law across Guyana.
