WIN WARNS DEMOCRACY AT RISK AS FOREIGN PARTNERS URGE PARLIAMENT TO ACT

HGP Nightly News – We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) says fresh international concern is now being voiced over Guyana’s stalled Parliament, as France’s Ambassador Olivier Plançon publicly urged that the National Assembly be allowed to function as the Constitution intends, including the appointment of a Leader of the Opposition and the resumption of sittings without further delay.

WIN pointed to Plançon’s comments as a direct call for constitutional order, quoting the ambassador as saying he is confident Guyana’s democratic institutions will resolve the impasse so Parliament can carry out its mission “on behalf of the people of Guyana.” The ambassador also stressed that the issue must be settled by Guyana’s “constitutional actors” and done “in accordance with the law.”

The party argued that France’s position mirrors what has already been expressed by several of Guyana’s key international partners, including representatives from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and the European Union, who have repeatedly signalled that a functioning Parliament and a properly constituted opposition leadership are central to democratic accountability.

WIN also highlighted the timeline following the September 1, 2025 General and Regional Elections, noting that President Irfaan Ali was sworn in on September 7 and that the 13th Parliament has only met once since then, on November 3. The party said no subsequent sitting has been called, even as the government speaks publicly about a busy legislative agenda and has announced that the 2026 Budget will be presented this month.

According to WIN, the prolonged pause in parliamentary business weakens oversight, reduces transparency, and deprives citizens of representation at a time when major national decisions are being discussed. The party is urging the Speaker and other constitutional officeholders to end what it described as continued delay, calling for Parliament to be convened immediately and for the Leader of the Opposition to be elected without further obstruction.
