Officials from the University of Guyana (UG) and the Ministry of Education have embarked on a series of site visits across the regions, as part of a new initiative aimed at expanding opportunities for students who were unable to secure placements in highly competitive programs such as engineering and medical sciences.
The visits form part of UG’s broader vision to decentralize access to higher education, ensuring that students outside of Georgetown also benefit from quality programs in science, technology, and other key disciplines.
According to education officials, the move is expected to help bridge the gap for students who meet entry requirements but face limited space in high-demand courses. By extending opportunities into the regions, the government hopes to strengthen human resource development, better equip young people for the job market, and support national growth in priority sectors.
This initiative underscores UG’s ongoing efforts to become more inclusive, while aligning with the government’s commitment to equitable access to tertiary education across Guyana.
