The University of Guyana (UG) will confer nine honorary doctorates during its 59th Convocation exercises, to be held from November 20–22 at the Turkeyen Campus. The recipients—drawn from fields including diplomacy, business, sport, engineering, literature, music, and education—have been recognized for their outstanding contributions to Guyana, the Caribbean, and the wider world.
According to UG, this year’s honourees embody the university’s mission of national development, innovation, and cultural pride.
The distinguished awardees are:
- Sir Ronald Sanders – Ambassador to the OAS and a transformative figure in regional diplomacy
- Kamal Samaro – Executive Chairman of Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) and pillar of the local business community
- Nicolette Fernandes – Guyana’s most decorated female squash champion
- Egbert Carter – Renowned civil engineer and environmental planner
- Grace Nichols – Award-winning poet and author
- John Agard – Internationally acclaimed poet and playwright
- Mahindra Persaud – Executive Chairman of the Nand Persaud Group of Companies
- Terry Gajraj – Legendary Caribbean chutney and soca artist
- Professor Clement Sankat – Distinguished academic leader in engineering, education, and research
Sir Ronald Sanders will receive his honorary doctorate during the Faculty of Social Sciences graduation ceremony on Saturday, November 22.
UG noted that the recipients’ achievements “inspire the next generation of Guyanese and Caribbean citizens” and reflect the values of leadership, creativity, innovation, and service.
