The University of Guyana African Cultural Association (UGACA) says it is committed to preserving African culture on campus and helping students feel culturally represented and informed.
Newly elected UGACA President Tasiyelle Paul told Nightly News that the executive intends to strengthen African-centered learning and participation, ensuring that students understand the “richness and history” of African traditions.
Secretary Naomi Watson said the association’s objectives include encouraging active participation in cultural activities rather than just passive learning. “Students broaden their understanding when they engage,” she emphasized.
Former president and co-founder Akeem Stoby highlighted UGACA’s annual Kwanzaa celebration, describing it as a festival of unity similar to Christmas, aimed at strengthening community bonds.
UGACA also announced plans for:
- A campus-wide cultural extravaganza
- A Christmas toy drive for over 100 children in Goed Intent, West Bank Demerara
- Collaboration with civil society groups
Assistant Secretary Angelique Forero said racism still affects some students financially and emotionally, disconnecting them from their heritage. UGACA, she stressed, is working to ensure African students feel empowered and fairly represented.
