As Guyana approaches its anticipated general and regional elections in November 2025, the United States government is reaffirming its commitment to transparent, peaceful, and credible electoral processes.
Speaking at the Private Sector Commission’s (PSC) Annual General Meeting, US Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot underscored the importance of political stability and regional security, stating that Guyana remains a key partner for the United States, particularly in energy cooperation and regional development.
“We greatly value our strong working relationship with the government and, of course, the private sector including the PSC. We remain committed to working with you to promote a transparent, predictable regulatory environment that welcomes US and international investment,” Ambassador Theriot said.
She acknowledged that political and civil unrest—especially around elections—remains a major concern for US investors. She cited the 2020 elections as a pivotal moment that demonstrated the US’s steadfast stance on upholding democratic values in Guyana.
“The two most common concerns that we hear from US companies looking at investing in Guyana are political and civil unrest, and tensions with Venezuela,” the Ambassador noted.
She added that lessons learned from the last elections will be used to support Guyana’s path toward a free, fair, and trustworthy electoral process this year.
On the government side, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo previously signaled that the next general elections will likely be held in November 2025. Meanwhile, President Irfaan Ali reiterated his administration’s commitment to staying within the bounds of the constitutional timeline, ensuring elections are held as required by law.
“We will never go beyond our constitutional mandate,” the President assured citizens.
The US Embassy and the Private Sector Commission have indicated they will remain actively engaged in election preparedness efforts and democratic strengthening as the election date nears.
