SOUTH RUIMVELDT, GEORGETOWN — Residents of South Ruimveldt and the surrounding areas now have a new destination to beat the tropical heat. Tropical Sno Guyana, an extension of the popular American shaved ice franchise, officially opened its doors on Saturday at 4733 Aubrey Barker Road. Located just a “stone’s throw” from the new Heroes Highway and the South Ruimveldt roundabout, the outlet promises a premium twist on the traditional Guyanese “snow cone.”

The launch marks the beginning of what the proprietor hopes will be a nationwide expansion of the “cool happiness” brand.

More Than Shaved Ice: A Place for Connection

Owner and proprietor Neil McPhoy described the opening as the culmination of a lifelong dream rooted in faith and perseverance. He emphasized that the establishment is designed to be more than a retail outlet; it is a community space.

  • The Menu: While the core product is premium shaved ice with over 40 distinct flavors, the menu also features brownies, milkshakes, and specialty coffees.
  • The Atmosphere: McPhoy’s vision was to create a cozy, family-friendly environment. “Tropical Sno Guyana was not created just to sell shaved ice, but we are here to create experiences,” he told the gathering.
  • National Vision: This Aubrey Barker location is the first of many planned outlets, with McPhoy aiming to establish a presence in every administrative region of Guyana.

The Power of the Franchise Model

The opening was attended by Bruce Ellsworth, Senior Commercial Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Guyana, who highlighted the economic benefits of the franchise relationship.

  • Proven Success: Ellsworth noted that the franchise model is an ideal entry point for local entrepreneurs because it provides a “basic prescription” for success, including specialized equipment and a recognized brand name.
  • Quality Control: The partnership ensures that Guyanese consumers receive the same high-quality ingredients and service standards found in any Tropical Sno outlet in the United States.

Sweetness in South Ruimveldt

As Georgetown continues to expand and the “Heroes Highway” brings more traffic through the Aubrey Barker corridor, the arrival of Tropical Sno adds a layer of modern, international retail to the local landscape. For the people of South Ruimveldt, it’s a sweet and cold addition to the neighborhood—one that aims to turn a simple cup of shaved ice into a lasting memory.
