The Guyana Marriott Hotel is set to come alive this weekend as attorney, chef, and newly published author Saleisha Averhart hosts a vibrant Food and Rum Festival, where she will also launch her debut cookbook, “Tasting My Way Through the Caribbean.”
The event, scheduled for Saturday, November 22, promises a flavorful celebration of Caribbean culinary heritage, featuring a fusion of regional cuisines, premium rums, and the author’s personal storytelling through food.
Averhart, who describes herself as “an attorney, cookbook author… and someone deeply committed to tying my professional endeavours to my personal story,” brings both charm and cultural pride to the event.
“I’m originally from the Caribbean, and migrated to the U.S. as a young child with my mother and siblings,” she said, noting that her journey mirrors that of many Caribbean families seeking opportunity abroad.
A Cookbook Steeped in Caribbean History and Heart
“Tasting My Way Through the Caribbean” is the product of Averhart’s travels throughout the region, documenting flavors, stories, and cultural roots.
The culinary tour behind the book includes:
- Trinidad & Tobago
- St. Kitts & Nevis
- Guyana
- Puerto Rico
- Grenada
Averhart emphasized that the recipes reflect a broad cultural palette shaped by African, Indian, and Indigenous influences—foundational components of Caribbean cuisine.
“What that really shows is our African and Indian roots, and I wanted to ensure we were fully representing those influences in Caribbean food,” she explained.
A Festival of Flavors Awaits
Saturday’s Food and Rum Festival will offer the public an opportunity to indulge in exquisite dishes, rich cultural expression, and premium wines and rums—while meeting the charismatic author herself.
With Averhart’s magnetic energy and deep connection to the Caribbean culinary landscape, organizers expect a lively turnout.
The event is open to the public.
