The Surinamese Embassy in Guyana on Saturday evening hosted a grand reception at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre to celebrate two historic milestones—Suriname’s 50th Independence Anniversary and five decades of diplomatic relations with Guyana.

The event, held in partnership with the Suriname–Guyana Chamber of Commerce, brought together government officials, diplomats, private-sector leaders, and members of the diaspora.

Surinamese Ambassador Liselle Blankendal reflected on her country’s journey since achieving independence in 1975, noting that Suriname has transformed into a culturally rich and resilient nation.

“With 93% forest coverage, Suriname ranks among the most biodiverse countries in the world,” she stated, adding that major offshore developments are now driving a new era of sustainable economic growth.

Ambassador Blankendal also underscored the deepening cooperation between Georgetown and Paramaribo across trade, energy, infrastructure, and culture, describing diplomacy as a critical tool for regional progress.

Delivering remarks on behalf of the Government and people of Guyana, Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips congratulated Suriname on its golden jubilee. He highlighted the longstanding friendship between the two nations—built on mutual respect, shared values, and a collective vision for development.

“Our cooperation in energy, infrastructure, trade, security, and people-to-people connections reflects the trust and vision our leaders have built,” the Prime Minister affirmed.

Chair of the Suriname–Guyana Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Vishnu Doerga, emphasized the role of economic collaboration in strengthening regional resilience. He encouraged private-sector stakeholders to seize emerging opportunities in agriculture, logistics, tourism, and energy.

The Chamber reaffirmed its commitment to supporting cross-border investment and strengthening commercial ties as both nations enter a new phase of partnership.
