Mabaruma Mayor Under Police Investigation for Alleged Sexual Assault

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has confirmed that Mabaruma Mayor Trevor Leong is under investigation following allegations that he sexually assaulted a young woman on September 7, 2025.
Head of the GPF’s Corporate Communications Department, Mark Ramotar, told reporters that the matter remains under investigation but declined to provide further details.
Nightly News understands that after the young woman reported the alleged assault to the police at Mabaruma, the mayor was not detained and was allowed to leave. The complainant alleged that Leong “approached her, grabbed her breast, and attempted to kiss her on her cheek.” She further stated that when her boyfriend confronted the mayor, Leong allegedly punched him in the face.
After more than nine days without receiving updates, the young woman retained prominent attorney-at-law Nigel Hughes, who has since written to Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken demanding clarity on the status of the investigation.
Attorney Hughes is seeking confirmation on whether a criminal investigation has been launched, the nature of any offenses under consideration, and whether Mayor Leong was arrested or placed on bail. He also requested information on whether charges will be laid for both the alleged sexual assault and the alleged assault of his client’s boyfriend, as well as the status of the medical certificates for both complainants.
In his letter, Hughes warned that if there is no response from the Commissioner’s office by September 22, 2025, it would be interpreted as a failure to discharge official duties, prompting him to take further legal action.
The case remains under active review.
