GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — Following the successful commissioning of the Guyana–China Friendship Park in Region 3, President Dr. Irfaan Ali has turned his sights toward a massive “urban renewal” project for the capital: the total rehabilitation of the Guyana Zoological Park and Botanical Gardens.

The President describes the multi-billion dollar investment as a move to position the facility as a model for the wider Caribbean region, integrating modern animal care with green architectural walkways and waterfront development.

The Vision: A “Smart” Zoological Experience

The proposed transformation is exhaustive, aiming to shift the facility from a traditional zoo to a modern conservation and education hub.

  • Modern Infrastructure: The plan includes the full rehabilitation of gardens and water systems, alongside modern containment facilities designed to improve animal welfare.
  • Elevated Accessibility: New features include elevated bridges and pathways, allowing visitors to experience the landscape from a different perspective while ensuring the grounds are fully accessible.
  • Educational Integration: Dedicated education spaces will be built to facilitate school tours and research, alongside upgraded security and operational systems.
  • Urban Connectivity: The project is part of a larger plan to connect the zoo and gardens to proposed green architectural, cultural, and commercial waterfront walkways.

The Budgetary Puzzle: 2025 vs. 2026

While the vision is clear, the funding path has raised questions among financial analysts.

  • The 2025 Allocation: During the 2025 budget considerations, the government outlined $2 billion specifically for developing a facility to house animals and create education-related spaces.
  • The 2026 Gap: The 2026 budget identifies a much smaller allocation of $114 million for “urban parks,” which is a broad category. No specific multi-billion dollar line item for the zoo was immediately identified in the 2026 books.
  • Rollover or New Funds? President Ali explained that the 2026 announcement expands the 2025 vision. It remains unclear if the works are being financed by a rollover of the $2 billion from 2025, a new funding source, or a reallocation within the urban renewal plan.

Conclusion: Value for Money?

President Ali has defended the scale of the project, stating that because of the size and complexity of the site, the project represents a “fantastic value for money investment.” As the capital continues to grow, the government is betting that high-quality public spaces will drive both local well-being and tourism. However, as works begin “shortly,” the public will likely look for more transparency on exactly how the previously approved 2025 funds have been utilized leading up to this latest announcement.
