GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — The Railway Courtyard was transformed into a vibrant hub of style and creativity on Friday evening as Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Susan Rodrigues, officially launched the Origins Guyana Fashion Festival 2026. This year’s festival, themed “A Diamond Legacy: Fashioning 60 Years,” is set to be the most elevated in the event’s history, serving as a flagship cultural tribute to Guyana’s upcoming 60th Independence Anniversary.
Addressing an energetic audience of designers, models, and industry stakeholders, Minister Rodrigues declared that the festival has moved beyond the runway to become a critical pillar of Guyana’s creative economy.
A Diamond Legacy: 60 Years of Identity
Scheduled to take place from July 3 to July 5, 2026, the festival’s theme was chosen to reflect Guyana’s national journey since 1966.
- Cultural Storytelling: The “Diamond Legacy” theme challenges designers to translate six decades of Guyanese history, struggle, and triumph into wearable art.
- Modern Creativity: While honoring the past, the Minister emphasized that the festival is also about “international relevance,” positioning Guyanese talent to compete on the global stage.
- A Year-Round Platform: Rodrigues revealed a strategic shift to ensure Origins is no longer just a weekend event, but a continuous platform for sharpening the business acumen of local creatives.
New Incentives: The Origins Fashion Awards
In a move to formally professionalize the industry, the Minister announced five new official awards accompanied by cash prizes. These awards are designed to recognize excellence and provide seed capital for local fashion houses.
The 2026 Award Categories:
- Best Fashion Designer: For technical mastery and cohesive collection vision.
- Best Emerging Designer: Highlighting new talent and fresh perspectives.
- Outstanding Storyteller/Innovator: For the most creative interpretation of the “Diamond Legacy” theme.
- Best Female Model: Recognizing poise, professional runway presence, and versatility.
- Best Male Model: Celebrating excellence in male modeling and industry standards.
From Talent to Enterprise
Minister Rodrigues was firm in her vision that the festival must drive “pragmatic results” for designers.
“Origins is more than a fashion show; it is about identity, storytelling, and opportunity. We are creating a platform where our designers can transform talent into enterprise. It was designed as a space rooted in growth and transformation, where talent is not only showcased but sharpened.” — Minister Susan Rodrigues
The Ministry is currently working with industry experts to host workshops leading up to the July event, focusing on “Creative Competitiveness” and the business of fashion, including export readiness and branding.
A Cornerstone of the Creative Economy
As anticipation builds for the July showcase, the Origins Guyana Fashion Festival 2026 is being positioned as a cornerstone of the nation’s cultural identity. By merging the celebration of 60 years of independence with the high-stakes world of fashion awards and cash incentives, the Ministry of Tourism is betting that the “Diamond Legacy” will produce a new generation of fashion entrepreneurs ready to dress the world in Guyanese identity.
