Opposition Leader Norton: Government to Blame for Chaos Following Adriana Younge Autopsy, Denounces Violence
GEORGETOWN, GUYANA – Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton has laid blame for the ongoing unrest across Guyana squarely at the feet of the Guyana Police Force and the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), following the release of the postmortem results for 11-year-old Adriana Younge, which listed drowning as the cause of death.
Speaking on Monday, Norton emphasized that the nationwide protests are fueled by public mistrust, particularly due to inaccurate and conflicting information provided by law enforcement regarding the circumstances surrounding Adriana’s death.
“The current situation is a direct result of the type and quality of information being fed to the public by the Guyana Police Force,” Norton said.
The opposition leader described the protests as multi-ethnic and organic, countering government claims that they are politically orchestrated.
“It’s a multi-ethnic protest movement, and the government is uncomfortable with that,” he explained. “They are doing everything to paint this as a political protest.”
Norton further accused the PPP/C of using criminal elements, including “10-day workers” and known offenders, to infiltrate peaceful demonstrations, cause mayhem, and blame the violence on the opposition.
“Let it be made very clear – we do not support looting or destruction of property,” Norton stressed. “We are fully in support of this struggle for justice.”
The APNU+AFC and the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) continue to call for accountability in Adriana’s case and have condemned any attempts by the government to deflect public anger through political blame games.
