No Local Law Prevents Azruddin Mohamed From Becoming Opposition Leader

Georgetown, Guyana – September 25, 2025 – The Working People’s Alliance (WPA) has argued that there is no domestic law prohibiting Azruddin Mohamed, leader of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, from taking the oath of office as Leader of the Opposition. However, the WPA warns that Guyana could soon face a serious legal and political clash between local statutes and international obligations.
According to WPA executive Dr. David Hinds, while local legislation does not restrict Mohamed from assuming the position, his sanctions by the United States for alleged gold smuggling complicate the matter.
“International means that Mr. Mohamed is under the cloud…what the courts will say is another matter,” Hinds noted, stressing that the judiciary may ultimately have to decide whether domestic law or international treaties take precedence.
The recently concluded General and Regional Elections saw the PPP/C securing 36 seats in the National Assembly, while WIN captured 16 seats, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) 12 seats, and the Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) one seat. Mohamed, as leader of WIN, is poised to enter Parliament and assume the Opposition Leader’s office.
Hinds highlighted the constitutional and treaty obligations Guyana must consider:
“That the Office of the Opposition Leader is not just a local issue but tied to international treaty that we have signed onto,” he explained.
The WPA believes the next sitting of Parliament could trigger far-reaching consequences for both governance and Guyana’s standing in the international arena, should the courts be asked to rule on the legitimacy of Mohamed’s appointment.
