NEW MARKET ST. VENDORS AGREE TO RELOCATE TO TEMPORARY LOCATION UNTIL EAST STREET PARKING LOT LOCATION FINALISED – MAYOR MENTORE

Vendors operating near the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation have agreed to temporarily relocate following a demand letter issued to the Georgetown Mayor and City Council, requesting the removal of vending activities in close proximity to the hospital.

According to an attorney’s letter reviewed by the council, vendors operating along New Market Street were formally asked on Wednesday to relocate for a one-week period to a nearby temporary lot. This interim measure is intended to allow the council to finalise preparations for a more suitable vending location adjacent to the East Street parking lot.

Mayor Alfred Mentore said the vendors have shown flexibility and cooperation throughout discussions, noting that efforts are underway to identify a satisfactory alternative that does not compromise public safety or hospital operations. He explained that placing a vending machine directly in front of the hospital poses risks, particularly by obstructing ambulance access and general entry to the medical facility.

The mayor acknowledged that remedial action was necessary to address congestion in the area and stressed that compliance with the council’s directive is essential. He said the temporary relocation aligns with a prior council agreement to ensure smooth traffic flow and maintain safety in this sensitive zone.

Mentore further disclosed that discussions were held involving Acting Town Clerk Candace Nelson, councillors, the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer Robbie Ramnarine, and other senior administrators of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. During those talks, agreement was reached to remove unoccupied stalls and caravans, creating space for a permanent vending area adjacent to the East Street parking lot.

The mayor noted that vendors participating in the discussions expressed support for the authorities’ position and recognised the importance of preserving safety and protecting lives. He reiterated that vending activities must not compromise the integrity of the roadway or emergency access to the hospital.

It was also agreed that vendors occupying space in front of the hospital must adhere strictly to the council’s directive. Failure to comply, Mentore warned, would result in administrative action. He added that reaching a compromise was necessary to avoid court proceedings while safeguarding the interests of both the vendors and the hospital.
